FAQs

Georgian furniture design is recognised for its balanced proportions, classical symmetry, and extensive use of dense hardwoods such as mahogany and walnut. Common structural details include cockbeaded drawer edges, brass swan-neck or ring handles, and bracket or claw-and-ball feet.

Primary woods predominantly featured solid or veneered mahogany, oak, and walnut, often lined with pine or oak for interior drawer boxes. Hardware typically consisted of cast brass drop handles, ring pulls, and iron locks.

Authenticity can be verified by examining hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn secondary timbers on drawer bases, and age-consistent oxidisation on rear panels and underside surfaces. Cast brass fittings should display minor irregularities consistent with period hand-finishing.

A Georgian chest functions as an anchoring focal point in modern bedrooms, hallways, or living spaces, providing practical storage while grounding contemporary decor. Pairing warm dark timbers with modern artwork or minimal lighting creates an engaging textural contrast.

Dust surfaces regularly with a clean, dry lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the patina. Avoid placing solid timber items near direct heat sources or in fluctuating humidity to prevent timber movement and cracking.
