This large nineteenth-century Japanese traditional tea brazier and censer is formed from dark bronze. The vessel stands on three short, solid tripod legs and features twin animal-head handles mounted on each side with loose drop rings, alongside a distinct, openwork pierced collar around the upper rim displaying floral and abstract cut-out motifs, plus an additional asymmetrical lobed opening on the upper body. Measuring 41 cm across, the vessel offers substantial presence for interior placement. In a modern interior, this piece serves well as a decorative focal point upon a large sideboard top, console table, or within a gentleman's library setting. It provides an authentic antique oriental accent for traditional display spaces, bringing a dark patinated metal texture to surfaces in reception rooms or studies.

A furo is a portable brazier traditionally crafted from bronze or iron, designed to hold burning charcoal for heating water during the Japanese tea ceremony. These vessels typically feature a wide opening, ventilation apertures, and sturdy tripod feet to elevate the heat source off tatami mats.

Antique censers were predominantly cast using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques from bronze, an alloy composed of copper and tin often mixed with small amounts of zinc or lead. Once cast, the surface was hand-chased to refine decorative details and treated with chemical patination to achieve dark, rich tonal finishes.

Authentic period vessels exhibit evidence of hand-finishing, subtle irregularities in the casting, and genuine surface patination that develops naturally in recessed areas over time. Weight is also a factor, as historical cast bronze objects possess a dense, substantial feeling compared to modern reproductions.

An antique bronze vessel serves as a commanding sculptural centrepiece on a sideboard, console table, or fireplace hearth. Its dark tones and historical silhouette contrast well against neutral stone, natural timber, or contemporary painted surfaces.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clear recessed areas. Avoid abrasive chemical polishes or water immersion, as these can strip the original historical patina; a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax can be applied periodically to preserve the metal.
