This late Victorian single bedstead dates from 1890 and follows a Victorian style. Constructed from solid walnut with a warm brown timber finish, the piece features an arched, double-domed headboard and footboard adorned with moulded panels, carved laurel wreath motifs, and central mother-of-pearl and abalone shell floral inlays displaying iridescent greens and pinks. Ogee bracket feet fitted with small brass casters support the substantial frame, which measures 138 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 210 cm deep. General scuffs, scratches, and marks commensurate with age are visible across the polished wood surfaces. Suitable for use in a bedroom as a functional single sleeping frame, this bed accommodates a standard single mattress without a base included. The solid side rails lock securely into position to form a sturdy structure suited for everyday domestic environments.

Victorian bed designs typically featured rich hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany, characterised by arched headboards, moulded panels, and decorative inlays like mother-of-pearl or abalone shell.

Craftsmen utilised solid walnut and walnut veneers over softwoods, employing mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-carved architectural details and shell marquetry.

Authentic pieces exhibit original brass castors, subtle variations in natural shell inlay, genuine patination, and evidence of hand-carved wreath motifs or traditional joinery.

Pairing dark polished timber frames with crisp white linen bedding, neutral wall surfaces, and modern lighting creates a balanced contrast between historic woodwork and contemporary design.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a beeswax polish sparingly, avoiding excess moisture or chemical cleansers that could loosen delicate shell inlays.
