Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This Victorian Revival four poster bed from 1890 is constructed from wrought iron, cast iron and brass, and is finished in a soft cream colour. The headboard and footboard display an arched frame with a sunburst pattern of radiating spindles, complemented by rounded corner posts topped with polished brass finials. The frame accommodates a British King Size base and mattress set, measuring 152 cm in width, 208 cm in length, and 21 cm in height. Suitable for use in a bedroom, this piece brings an English Country House aesthetic to domestic interiors. It requires a separate bed base, available in firm or sprung variations, to support the mattress. The design incorporates open metal framework and vertical posts that create a defined sleeping area while maintaining an open visual presence in the room.

FAQs

Metal four poster beds grew in popularity during the nineteenth century as a hygienic alternative to traditional wooden canopy beds. These frames feature four tall vertical posts designed to support drapery or remain unadorned for a clean silhouette.

Traditional bedsteads are constructed primarily from wrought or cast iron, frequently featuring brass finials, decorative castings, and painted finishes. Joint connections were historically cast using poured molten iron into specialised moulds.

Authentic metal beds typically feature heavy cast iron joints known as chill castings, hand-finished ironwork, and original brass fittings showing natural patination. Additionally, earlier frames often possess non-standard imperial dimensions compared to modern mattress sizing.

A metal four poster bed provides vertical structure without visually overcrowding a room. Pair the painted metal frame with crisp linen bedding, textured throws, and neutral wall colours to emphasise its architectural silhouette.

Dust the metal frame regularly using a dry, lint-free cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays that can strip painted surfaces or patinated brass. If oxidisation occurs on unpainted iron, gently buff the area with fine wire wool and apply a protective microcrystalline wax.
