This oil painting on canvas laid to board depicts the Dutch Golden Age artist Gerard ter Borch, executed in a late nineteenth-century French style. The subject has dark brown hair, a prominent moustache, and a white ruffled collar set against a neutral background under chiaroscuro lighting. Visible details include craquelure across the painted surface, touches of restoration, and the exposed corners of the canvas. A small metal title plaque is fixed to the lower rail. The artwork sits inside a dark brown moulded wooden frame styled after Dutch seventeenth-century examples, complete with beaded decorative edging and minor antique repairs. Measuring 43 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, this portrait suits placement above the mantel in a study or gentleman's library. The piece functions well as a focal point on a panelled or painted wall within a traditional or eclectic interior.

Dutch Golden Age portraiture from the 17th century is characterised by naturalistic depiction, dramatic use of chiaroscuro lighting, and detailed representation of costume elements like ruffs, collars, and facial hair.

Painters typically employed hand-milled pigments suspended in linseed oil applied to linen canvas or oak panels, housed within dark ebonised or moulded timber frames.

Key indicators include authentic age-related craquelure across the paint layer, historical timber stretchers or panel construction, oxidation on the canvas backing, and natural varnish discolouration.

A traditional oil portrait provides strong visual structure when hung against dark moody wall paint, arranged within a curated gallery wall, or set above a minimalist fireplace mantel.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, sudden humidity changes, and radiator heat sources, dusting the frame and surface gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush.
