Flower Fairy Watercolour ‘Apple Blossom’ by Marjorie L Davies

1920 - 1940
Description

A beautiful watercolour by the illustrator Marjorie Louise Davies (1906-2007) depicting flower fairies representing Apple Blossom. The work shows two fairies amongst the fruit tree blossom, where one is alarmed by an approaching bee and is typical for the style of the artist. The watercolour retains the original mount and frame which is painted and textured. The condition of the work is good with the colours bright and fresh. The piece is titled, signed and dated to the front 1948. Marjorie Louise Davies was one of Enid Blyton's favourite artists, was born in Hampstead, the only daughter of Alfred and Louise Clements. She studied at St Martin's School of Art, London, from which she was hired by the Link Studio to illustrate My Magazine, Arthur Mee's 1920s periodical for youngsters. She married John Davies in 1935 and her career was interrupted by the war when she served with the Women's Land Army at farms in Sussex. After the war, she contacted Enid Blyton about her drawings, but the writer told her not to send samples unless they were first-class, which they were, resulting in Davies illustrations appearing in the Bedside, Holiday and Flower annuals, as well as the Enid Blyton and Sunny Stories magazines. The whole is a great example of the illustrators work and of flower fairy painting.

This 20th century illustration watercolour painting by Marjorie Louise Davies depicts two winged fairies and an approaching bumblebee amongst soft pink apple blossoms. The paper artwork features handwritten titles and signatures at the front, mounted behind glass within a textured gilt frame. The frame displays a simple rectangular moulding, while the artwork retains its original pale paper mount with thin double border lines. Measuring 32 cm high, 39.5 cm wide and 1.5 cm deep, this framed piece fits comfortably above a sideboard in an English country house interior, bringing a whimsical decorative touch to a living room, hallway or study wall.

Early-to-mid 20th-century fairy illustrations typically feature whimsical, nature-inspired subjects rendered in delicate watercolour washes, popularised by British storybook art and botanical studies.

Vintage watercolour artwork is created using water-soluble pigments applied to paper or board, framed under protective glass with card mounts and wooden framing.

Authentic original watercolours exhibit visible brushwork, variable pigment intensity, artist signatures, and natural paper ageing, contrasting with uniform dot-matrix patterns found in mechanical prints.

A framed vintage watercolour can be displayed within a gallery wall, rested on a mantlepiece, or positioned in a bedroom or nursery to introduce subtle colour and classic detail.

Display watercolour paintings away from direct sunlight and humid environments, using UV-protective glass and acid-free mounting boards to prevent fading and discolouration.
