This early 20th-century Edwardian filing chest of drawers exemplifies a gentleman's library style, constructed from solid oak with a rich golden brown colour. The tall structure stands on a plinth base and incorporates fourteen drawers of varying depths, flanked by fielded panel sides. Each drawer features a metal cup handle combined with an index label holder, and one key-lockable drawer controls a central locking mechanism for the other compartments. The top surface includes a short gallery border, accompanied by surface drag marks and expected marks from use alongside a professional clean that preserves the natural patina. Measuring 162.5 cm high, 56.5 cm wide, and 58.4 cm deep, the unit provides ample vertical storage while occupying a modest floor footprint. In a modern home, this practical antique suits an office workspace, a study, or a hobby room for organising documents, stationery, or craft materials, while the top tier offers an additional platform for display.

Early 20th-century oak filing cabinets were designed for commercial, architectural, and legal institutions requiring organised document storage. They typically feature solid oak construction, multiple shallow drawers, paneled side profiles, and brass hardware with integrated label holders.

These pieces were built using solid hardwoods, predominantly oak or mahogany, to withstand daily commercial use. Hardware was typically cast brass or steel, incorporating combination cup handles and index frames, while internal drawer bases often used secondary hardwoods or pine.

Authentic examples feature period-correct joinery, such as machine-cut or hand-cut dovetails, paneled side and back construction, brass fittings showing natural oxidisation, and original locking mechanisms or index card slides.

A tall oak filing cabinet functions as utilitarian storage in a home office, hallway, or studio space. Its vertical proportions provide storage for paperwork, craft supplies, or small items while maintaining a compact floor footprint.

Apply a clear beeswax polish along the grain twice yearly to protect the timber and maintain the original finish. Dust regularly with a dry cloth, avoid exposure to direct heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage, and clean brass handles without abrasive chemicals.
