A woman can be seen sitting by the edge of a small waterfall pond with her daughter by her side. Meanwhile, the little girl leans across her mother’s lap to reach out to a small black and white dog. Behind them a verdant hill range provides a picturesque backdrop.
Edward Henry Rickman Holmes was born in Marylebone, London on 1 September 1823 to the miniature painter James Holmes (1777-1860) and his wife Ann. His brother George Augustus Mortimer Leigh Holmes (1828-1911) was a genre and landscape painter. Little is known about his early education, but judging from the quality of both his work and that of his brother, they most likely would have received tuition from their father who taught art for a time before becoming successful.
Edward initially painted portraits but also began producing landscapes often featuring figures and animals for which he became best known for. From the late 1820’s, the family lived at 15 Wilton Street in Westminster and it was from here in 1841, that he made his debut at the Royal Society of British Artists. In 1847 he also began exhibiting at the British Institution from this address. From the early 1850’s he lived in the Chelsea area and in 1855, first exhibited at the Royal Academy. He and his brother George were very close and after the death of their parents during the 1860’s, stayed living together at 2 Prospect Place, Cheyne Walk, the home of their brother in law.
By 1870, the brothers had moved to 62 Cheyne Walk, a fashionably artistic area of London where they remained for the rest of their lives. James Whistler was one of his neighbours and was also a colleague at the Royal Society of British Artists. In 1889, Holmes was elected a member of the RSBA where he continued to exhibit until the year of his death. He died on 26 May, 1893 at 147 Church Street, Chelsea.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
