Title: Portrait of a beautiful young Italian woman playing a lute in traditional provincial attire.
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Date: Circa 1870
Provenance: From a private Nottingham (UK) collection

A large and beautifully composed oil on canvas portrait of an attractive Italian lady playing a lute by the well-collected, predominantly 19th century British portrait artist William Joseph Carroll.
William Joseph Carroll (1842-1902) was a 19th to early 20th Century British artist who specialised in portraits and is best known for his paintings of beautiful women with floral surroundings.

An enigmatic character, Carroll's style is very distinctive and immediately recognisable. His characters were often adorned with flowers or fruit and some of his generic studies were completed whilst he travelled throughout Europe and the UK,

His work is highly sought after and is held in the UK Government Art Collection.
This portrait is an absolutely delightful work and is a prime example of the artist's talent for creating expressive compositions that are not only skillfully executed depictions of female figures, but also evocative scenes that invite the viewer into the world of the subject. The tonality of the composition is still very distinctive and the artist had a remarkable ability of capturing the sitters personality.

Carroll's work depicts both the innocence and beauty of the subject while at the same time gives each figure a unique character.
Given this painting is approximately 150 years old, it is in very good condition. It is a large-scale piece and would make a fabulous focal point in any room.
Carroll's work is highly sought after around the world with records showing that his work has regularly been offered through well-established international auction houses.
Condition report: The painting is in excellent original condition having been lightly cleaned and is without any apparent intervention and without any repairs to the verso . The paint surface is stable airy only feint areas of craquelure and is even. The stretcher bars are true and the canvas although unlined is still in good tension.
The original gilt frame had been refurbished and is offered as a gift. See notes below regarding frames.
