1920s Art Deco Painted Glass Silhouette Portrait of a Lady – Antique Framed Miniature Initialled Fr

A charming and highly decorative Art Deco period miniature silhouette portrait of a fashionable lady, dating to approximately the 1920s and presented in an attractive ebonised and gilt-highlighted wooden frame.

The portrait depicts an elegant young woman in profile facing right, wearing a dramatic broad-brimmed hat with feathered decoration. Her hair is gathered behind with finely rendered loose strands falling towards the shoulder, while a large ribbon bow is depicted at the neck.

The strong black profile against the pale oval ground gives the portrait a particularly striking graphic quality associated with the Art Deco period, while the lady’s elaborate costume deliberately recalls the earlier tradition of Georgian and Regency silhouette portraiture.

The silhouette appears to be executed on or in association with textured/frosted glass, which produces an attractive softly textured surface when viewed under changing light. Close examination reveals particularly fine detailing around the eyelashes, facial profile, individual strands of hair, hat decoration and ribbon.

Of additional interest, the portrait is clearly initialled “FR” at the lower left. We have been unable to establish the identity of the artist and therefore make no firm attribution, although the initials appear integral to the work.

The portrait is housed in its attractive ebonised wooden frame, enriched with narrow gilt/metallic decorative borders. The frame is of traditional pinned/nailed construction and retains an old paper/card-covered reverse together with its hanging fitting.

A lovely diminutive decorative portrait which displays extremely well and would make an attractive addition to a collection of Art Deco, silhouette portraiture, portrait miniatures or early 20th-century decorative art.
