Brave Fine Art has dated this Dutch Marine Oil Painting to the 18th Century.
Numerous sails appear beyond. In the foreground, a small rowing boat containing several figures is being tossed about. Its occupants appear vulnerable alongside the enormous warship, which continues majestically through the swell. To the right, another vessel heels as it meets the water, while further ships pass quietly across the horizon.
Marine painting flourished in the Netherlands during the 17th century, when the sea was vital to both Dutch prosperity and national identity. Our painting was created around 1730 and follows in this earlier tradition. In many ways, it's an homage to the great marine painter Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707), one of the luminaries of the Dutch Golden Age.
Paintings such as this offered a glimpse back towards an extraordinary period of maritime achievement, while retaining the simple appeal of watching everyday life unfold upon an unpredictable sea.
