Catalogue Note

More is shown half-length against a dark background wearing rich red clothing with broad fur trim.

Across his chest is the elaborate gold Collar of Esses with Tudor rose pendant, creating a strong visual connection with Tudor court imagery.

The contrast between deep red, pale fur, gold and the dark background gives the painting considerable decorative presence.

Hans Holbein the Younger's celebrated 1527 portrait established the enduring visual image of More.

The present painting dates from the early 20th century and belongs to the much later tradition inspired by that historic portrait type.

Cheffins Fine Art catalogued the work as Manner of Hans Holbein (Early 20th Century), and this attribution is retained.

It is not offered as an original work by Hans Holbein.

Sir Thomas More

Thomas More was a lawyer, scholar, Renaissance humanist, writer and statesman who became Lord Chancellor under Henry VIII.

His Utopia was first published in 1516.

More's eventual conflict with Henry VIII resulted in his execution in 1535.

Customs Payment & Brexit

Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD operates on a Delivery Duty Unpaid (DDU) basis which means that the International buyer is responsible for any import duties, taxes & customs clearance charges and any other customs charges which may be necessary to release an order from international customs.

Following the UK leaving the EU on 1st January 2021 (BREXIT) there have been some changes to customs & duty charges for EU customers. Tax and import duty varies from country to country so we recommend you check with your local tax office to see if any fees will be payable.
