Introduction
A characterful early 20th century British coaching scene by Philip H Rideout, an artist particularly associated with equestrian, coaching, hunting and racing subjects.
Two chestnut horses travel briskly along a country road pulling a four wheeled carriage. The coachman wears a brown coat and black top hat and holds the reins and coaching whip. He is accompanied by a lady in pink and a gentleman in darker formal clothing.
The road passes through mature trees and green vegetation towards distant buildings beneath a broad blue and clouded sky.

The Artist
Philip H Rideout was a British sporting painter active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His precise life dates vary between published sources, so we avoid presenting disputed dates as established fact.
Coaching formed an important part of his known work. Christie’s has documented numerous carriage and sporting subjects by Rideout, including A Mail Coach in a Winter Landscape and a Mail Coach in Summer, dated 1897, and A Coach and Four in the Snow, signed and dated 1908 lower right.
The latter is particularly relevant as an independently documented Rideout coaching composition from the same year as the present painting.

Condition Report
Offered in antique condition consistent with age. Age related craquelure is visible across the painted surface, particularly within the sky, together with scattered marks, surface dirt and localised wear and paint disturbance.
The reverse shows the canvas on a traditional wooden stretcher. No lining is apparent from the available photographs.
The gilt frame has age related rubbing, cracking, scuffs, chips, small losses and areas of historic overpainting or restoration.
