Description

This tiny 'chanteh' or vanity-bag was woven in warp-faced alternating float-weave technique and specific to the Darrehshuri tayefeh within the Qashqa'i Confederacy. Both faces are in the same technique with one face having a central 'zig-zag' pattern, possibly symbolising flowing water.

In excellent condition and complete with tassels, this little bag was woven circa 1900 and might have contained a small mirror.

Size: 16 x 15cm (6. 5" x 6") excluding tassels.

A Qashqai vanity bag is a small, flatwoven textile pouch historically created by nomadic Qashqai women in South-West Persia. These small bags were constructed using traditional slit-weave or soumak techniques to hold personal toiletries, cosmetics, or small valuable items during seasonal migrations.

Traditional Qashqai textiles are handwoven using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool for both warp and weft threads. The wool yarns are coloured with natural plant and mineral dyes, resulting in rich navy blues, deep madder reds, terracottas, and natural ivory tones.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-spun wool displaying slight yarn diameter variations (slubs), subtle colour variations (abrash) from natural dye batches, intricate geometric diamond motifs, and original finishing details such as braided side cords, fringe tassels, and woven hanging loops.
