Description

Fine, 19th century French Sèvres parian porcelain library bust of Napoleon Bonaparte after Antoine-Denis Chaudet (1763-1810). Chaudet's original model of this portrait of Napoleon was created in 1799 with the final marble version completed in 1804. Adopted as the official portrait of Napoleon it was widely disseminated throughout the Empire. Manufacturers 'Sevre' 'RF' for 'Republique Française' and '1848' date impressed to the back. Good quality clean example.

Parian ware is a type of unglazed porcelain developed in the nineteenth century, formulated to simulate carved white marble. It contains a higher proportion of feldspar than standard porcelain, resulting in a matte, vitrified surface texture.

Parian busts were manufactured by casting liquid porcelain slip into plaster moulds, allowing detailed classical profiles to be reproduced. Following drying, the piece was fired at high temperatures without a glaze to achieve its characteristic marble-like finish.

Authentic nineteenth-century Parian items typically feature crisp moulding detail, a smooth semi-translucent surface, and incised maker marks or inscriptions on the base. Later reproductions frequently display blurred casting seam lines and a coarser surface texture.

A classical white portrait bust functions as a focal accent when placed among books on a dark timber shelf or atop a fireplace mantelpiece. Positioned against dark painted walls or structured joinery, the light ceramic material creates strong visual contrast.

Because unglazed Parian porcelain lacks a protective outer glaze, dust can settle into the porous surface over time. Cleaning should be done using a soft-bristled brush alongside warm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbers.
