Rare Antique Regency Mahogany Secretaire Sideboard Writing Desk

A rare and exceptional antique Regency mahogany secretaire sideboard dating to circa 1815, beautifully designed as both an elegant sideboard and a fully fitted writing desk.

The piece has a finely shaped gallery back with scroll detail above a superb quality mahogany top and central bow fronted secretaire section. The fall front opens to reveal a beautifully fitted interior with eight small drawers, original turned knobs, pigeonholes, a secret storage compartment and the original leather writing surface.

The central secretaire is flanked by four cockbeaded mahogany drawers and two cupboard doors cleverly designed with four dummy drawer fronts, retaining their fantastic original ornate brass lion mask ring handles. The arrangement gives the piece wonderful symmetry while providing a remarkable amount of useful storage.

The quality of the mahogany is especially good, with a rich colour and attractive figuring throughout. The combination of the bow fronted centre, fitted secretaire, tall side pedestals and shaped gallery gives this an unusually architectural and important appearance.

It stands on its original turned tapering mahogany legs and is a particularly impressive example of Regency cabinetmaking. Pieces of this type are increasingly difficult to find, especially retaining so many original details and with the added versatility of functioning as both a sideboard, writing desk and secretaire.

Condition Report

A remarkable example in lovely original condition with a wonderful colour and patina. The original brass fittings, fitted secretaire interior and leather writing surface remain in place. Minor marks and signs of age are consistent with an antique piece of this period. The design, quality and unusual dual-purpose construction make this a particularly special statement piece.
