Antique English Cast Brass Fly Vesta Match Holder Hinged Wings & Striker C.1900

An unusual and highly decorative antique novelty vesta or match holder modelled as a large fly, probably English and dating from the late Victorian to Edwardian period.

Substantially cast in brass, the insect is naturalistically modelled with broad veined wings, prominent textured compound eyes, an elongated body and six individually formed legs. The darkened exterior patina contrasts attractively with the warmer golden brass visible within the body.

The upper wing section is hinged immediately behind the head and lifts to reveal a deep hollow compartment intended for the storage of matches. The underside of the hinged wing section incorporates a broad series of closely spaced parallel ribs, forming the original match-striking surface and confirming its function as a novelty vesta rather than simply a decorative insect box.

At approximately 197.7 g, the piece has pleasing weight and solidity. The substantial casting, simple integral hinge, hand-finished surfaces and naturally developed patination are consistent with manufacture around the turn of the 20th century.

Novelty animal and insect-form match holders became popular desk and smoking accessories during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, combining practical function with amusing and often highly sculptural designs.

There is a small circular casting or workshop mark visible inside the compartment, although no identifiable manufacturer’s mark or registration number is present.

The piece retains a pleasing aged surface with general wear, oxidation, rubbing to raised areas and minor casting irregularities commensurate with age. The hinged wings remain operational and the internal compartment and striker are intact.
