A fascinating group of six antique Southeast Asian bronze animal-form trade weights, of the type widely known in the antiques market as Burmese or Thai “opium weights.”

The group comprises a variety of animal and mythical-beast forms, including elephant and bird/beast types, each cast upon an individual pedestal base.

Most importantly, the weights correspond very closely with the traditional tical / kyat weighing system historically used across Burma, Siam and neighbouring regions:

Pair 1: 33.6g and 33.0g — approximately 2 tical each

Pair 2: 65.6g and 65.3g — approximately 4 tical each

Pair 3: 81.8g and 81.4g — approximately 5 tical each

This close relationship to recognised historical weight standards strongly supports their original function as trade weights rather than purely decorative animal figures.

Animal-form bronze weights were historically used throughout Burma, Siam/Thailand, Laos and neighbouring regions for weighing a wide variety of commercial goods. Although commonly called “opium weights” by collectors today, their historical use was much broader.

The varied animal forms and differing pedestal shapes suggest this is an assembled regional group rather than one original graduated matching set. Burmese traditions commonly used hintha or hamsa birds and mythical chinthe-type beasts, while elephant forms are also encountered in the wider Siamese and Laotian trade-weight tradition.

The bronzes display attractive dark brown and greenish patination, with surface wear, rubbing and oxidation consistent with age and long handling.
