Late Qing Chinese Bronze Hexagonal Tripod Censer & Cover – Xuande Mark

Brief Description:

This is a fine-quality late Qing dynasty Chinese bronze hexagonal tripod censer and cover, bearing a Xuande mark and with excellent documented collection provenance.

The censer is of distinctive archaistic form, with a rounded, faceted body rising to a hexagonal neck decorated with intricate geometric motifs. A pair of elegant upswept handles flank the body, themselves ornamented with repeating key-pattern decoration.

The vessel stands upon three wonderfully modelled mythical beast-mask feet, while the removable pierced cover is surmounted by an impressive Qilin-type mythical beast finial.

Of particular interest, the underside bears a Xuande mark within a decorative panel, although the piece itself dates considerably later, to the late Qing dynasty.

The bronze displays an attractive aged patina, with darker tones within the recessed decoration beautifully emphasising the detail.
