Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 16TH CENTURY:
Carved strapwork and rosette mouldings: French Renaissance architectural motifs.
Deep rectangular notches behind the shoulders: original joints for an altarpiece framework.
Gesso and tempera worn through to bare wood: centuries of natural surface handling.
Underside cut from a single trunk: early sculpture carved from the round.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This sixteenth-century Renaissance walnut sculpture depicts the Madonna seated on a throne, retaining remnants of red and green polychrome paint alongside gesso and a warm brown timber finish. The carved figure wears draped robes and sits within an architectural seat featuring curved arms and a stepped plinth base, showing natural surface wear and old patination across the wood. The piece measures 33.5 cm high, 19 cm wide and 15 cm deep in practical terms. Suitable for display in a living space or study, this sculpture fits neatly upon a sideboard top or mantlepiece. It integrates well into traditional interiors as a decorative accent.

FAQs

During the 16th century, enthroned Madonna sculptures represented the Virgin Mary as the Queen of Heaven, functioning as devotional focus points in private chapels, churches, and religious institutions across Renaissance Europe.

Sculptors favoured dense European hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or lime wood. Figures were often carved from a single block and subsequently prepared with a gesso ground before applying tempera pigments or gold leaf.

Authenticity is evaluated through visible gouge and hand-tool marks, natural wood shrinkage aligned with the grain, genuine oxidisation of the timber, and layered wear to original polychrome or gilded surfaces.

A carved wooden sculpture functions as a strong focal point when set atop a dark timber sideboard, positioned on a stone fireplace mantelpiece, or displayed within a curated bookshelf alcove.

Preserve the carving by maintaining a consistent relative humidity level between 45% and 55% to prevent cracking. Dust gently using a dry, soft camel-hair brush and avoid liquid cleaners or wax polishes.
