A fine and highly desirable Newlyn Copper Arts & Crafts rose bowl with its original pierced lid, dating to circa 1900. This attractive and well-preserved example is fully signed and remains in excellent original, undamaged condition.

The bowl is particularly appealing for its distinctive Newlyn Copper decorative design, featuring a continuous frieze of large stylised fish swimming amongst stylised seaweed and bubbles. The maritime subject matter is characteristic of the imaginative Arts and Crafts metalwork produced by the Newlyn School and Newlyn Copper Works in Cornwall around the turn of the twentieth century.

The rose bowl retains its original pierced copper lid, an important and desirable feature as these lids are frequently found missing from surviving examples. The combination of the original bowl, lid, signature, condition and distinctive fish decoration makes this an especially attractive piece for collectors of Newlyn copper, Arts and Crafts metalwork, British copperware and late Victorian decorative arts.

An almost identical Newlyn copper rose bowl, although slightly larger, is illustrated on page 132, illustration no. 2, in Newlyn Copper Arts & Crafts Copper Work in Newlyn by Daryl Bennett and Colin Pill. The published example provides an important reference point for this design and demonstrates the close relationship between the two pieces.
