Italian Grand Tour Style Bronze Model of a Child’s Hand / Putto Forearm

19th century
For Sale by Artsonline
Description

Italian Grand Tour Style Bronze Model of a Child’s Hand / Putto Forearm

Brief Description:

Brief Description:

This is a charming and highly unusual miniature Italian Grand Tour style bronze sculpture, modelled as the forearm and hand of a young child, possibly representing a Classical putto or amorino.

The piece is beautifully modelled, with the hand held in an expressive open gesture, incorporating individually defined fingers, a palm, and delicately rendered creases.

Of hollow-cast construction, the sculpture has a wonderfully tactile quality and displays an attractive warm brown bronze patina throughout.

The subject is inspired by the Classical tradition of the putto or amorino – the small winged or infant figures frequently encountered in ancient Roman, Renaissance and later European decorative art.

Such miniature bronzes were produced as decorative objects and souvenirs for collectors inspired by the art and antiquities encountered during the Grand Tour of Italy.

The unusual subject matter, diminutive proportions, and sculptural quality make this a particularly appealing little object for a cabinet of curiosities, a desk, or a collection of Grand Tour bronzes.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Grand Tour style bronzes are cast metal replicas or original decorative pieces inspired by classical Greek, Roman, and Italian Renaissance art, popularised during eighteenth and nineteenth-century European educational travel.

These objects were typically cast from solid or hollow bronze using the lost-wax process or sand casting, followed by manual chasing and application of a chemical patina to achieve a uniform finish.

Authentic period pieces often display hand-finished details, signs of manual chasing, natural patination wear, and a weight consistent with solid or thick-walled metal casting.

Place the bronze model on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table alongside literature and classical objects to create a curated cabinet of curiosities display.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or abrasives that could alter the patination, and apply microcrystalline wax sparingly if protection is required.
