Fine 18th Century Reverse Glass Coloured Mezzotint / Feeding the Poor - By Fletcher After Sebastiaan Vrancx (1573-1647)

18th century
Description

This scene is part of a series depicting the Seven Acts of Mercy, specifically the act of "feeding the hungry" based on the Gospel of Matthew (25:35): "I was an Hungred, & Ye gave me Meat". [1, 2]

Sebastiaan Vrancx (1573–1647) was a prominent Antwerp painter known for battle scenes and genre subjects. He frequently depicted the Works of Mercy, sometimes combining them all onto a single panel or creating a series of individual scenes.

The print features characteristic elements of Vrancx's style, including architectural depth with classical columns and a pergola covered in greenery. The figures are dressed in period clothing, with an old man and others receiving food at the entrance of a substantial building, typical of his urban genre scenes.

This mezzotint is in a fine state of conservation and is housed in a quality ebonised frame with a sanded gilt slip.

An 18th-century reverse glass coloured mezzotint wall art piece depicts a scene from the Seven Acts of Mercy titled "Feeding the Poor", based on Sebastiaan Vrancx and engraved by Fletcher. The artwork displays a classical architectural setting with tall columns, an urban street filled with period-dressed figures receiving food, and a green vine-covered pergola overhead. Bilingual English and French inscriptions appear along the lower border of the image. The composition is housed inside a black ebonised wooden moulding frame featuring a textured gilded inner slip and a warm brown palette throughout the pigment and paper sheet. Signs of age include gentle surface craquelure across the painted and glazed scene. The framed artwork measures 49 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. It fits well in a gentleman's library or along a narrow wall space within a period interior, bringing traditional narrative artwork to a living room, hallway, or study.

A reverse glass mezzotint, or glass print, is an 18th-century decorative artwork created by transferring an engraved print face-down onto glass, rendering the paper translucent with oils, and applying hand-painted oil colours to the reverse side.

These works were produced using paper mezzotint engravings, hand-blown glass plates, natural resin adhesives, and oil-based paint pigments, framed in wooden mouldings with gilded interior slips.

Authentic pieces feature period glass with slight surface distortions or bubbles, natural varnish oxidisation, age-appropriate wear to the backing paint, and original engraved bilingual titling at the lower edge.

Display glass prints within a curated gallery wall in a hallway or study, pairing them with dark timber furniture and brass metalwork to accentuate their classical subject matter.

Maintain the print in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and damp conditions; dust the outer glass surface gently using a clean, dry microfibre cloth without liquid chemical cleaners.
