Pair of Early 20th Century Pastel Portraits by Emily Eyres (British, Active C.1890–1914)

1900 - 1920
Description

Pair of Early 20th Century Pastel Portraits by Emily Eyres (British, active c.1890–1914)

Pastel on paper

A sensitively rendered pair of pastel portraits by British artist Emily Eyres, both signed and dated 1914. Executed in soft tones with a refined eye for expression, the works portray two children with delicacy and warmth. The artist’s handling of form and focus on character — particularly in the eyes — is typical of her accomplished pastel style.

Emily Eyres exhibited at the Royal Academy in London between 1899 and 1904, showing works such as A Bachelor and Shadows. Based in Walton-on-Thames, she was active in Edwardian artistic circles alongside her husband, landscape painter John W. Eyres.

Framed size (each): 69 x 79 cm (27 x 31 in)

Strong colour with minor age-related marks to the backing and light surface wear under the glass. The portraits are presented in their original frames with later regilding. Ready to hang.

Declaration

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian pastel portraiture is recognised for its soft, blended medium, capturing delicate skin tones and subtle lighting typical of turn-of-the-twentieth-century British art.

Pastels were executed on textured paper or board using dry pigment sticks, usually mounted behind protective glass in carved giltwood or gesso frames to safeguard the sensitive powdered surface.

Authentic period pastels exhibit natural paper age patina, original hand-carved or molded timber frames, period artist signatures or dates, and gentle wear on frame high points.

Displaying paired antique portraits symmetrically above a sideboard, fireplace mantel, or console table adds historical depth and structural balance to modern living spaces.

Keep pastels away from direct sunlight and humid environments, clean glazing gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoid removing the frame backing to protect the dry pigments.
