Antique Georgian Gaudy Welsh "Bethesda" Pattern Ironstone Jug

19th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

A lovely Early 19th Century Antique Georgian Gaudy Welsh Ironstone Jug, this one of larger size and of panelled octagonal form, decorated in "Bethesda" pattern in an Imari palette of iron red and cobalt blue, the attractive green handle modelled as a serpent's tail. The underside impress marked "IRONSTONE CHINA", which would suggest an early date ~ Masons introduced their Patent Ironstone China in 1813, but, according to Geoffrey Godden, { Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares ~ A.C.C. Woodbridge 1980 }, within a few years, the description "Ironstone China" was taken up by other manufacturers, thus, while one might hazard a guess, it is not possible to identify the Maker of this piece with certainty.

Height ~ 16.00 cm. / 6.30 inches ~ Width ~ 11.00 cm. / 4.33 inches ~ Depth to include handle ~ 17.00 cm. / 6.69 inches ~ Year ~ Circa 1825

This early 19th-century Georgian Gaudy Welsh jug takes an octagonal panelled form in ironstone ceramic with a glossy glaze. The piece displays a hand-painted "Bethesda" pattern in an Imari palette of cobalt blue and rust red, complemented by a modelled green serpent's tail handle, a scalloped rim, and a floral motif. An impressed "IRONSTONE CHINA" mark sits on the underside. The jug measures 16 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 17 cm deep including the handle. It sits appropriately on a sideboard top in an English country house interior, serving as a decorative vessel for dried floral arrangements or as a standalone display piece.

FAQs

Gaudy Welsh pottery refers to a style of 19th-century earthenware ceramic pieces decorated with bold, hand-painted floral and geometric motifs. Produced predominantly in Wales and Staffordshire between 1820 and 1860, the style utilised bright cobalt blue, rust red, green, and copper lustre glazes inspired by Japanese Imari patterns.

Ironstone pottery was crafted using a mixture of clay, feldspar, and ground flint or slag, producing a dense, hard vitreous stoneware. The body was typically glazed and finished with hand-applied enamel colours and metallic lustres that required multiple kiln firings.

Authentic pieces can be identified by their distinctive colour palette featuring deep cobalt blue, iron red, bright green, and metallic copper lustre. Authentic 19th-century examples often exhibit slight glaze crazing, hand-painted variations, and heavy, durable ironstone bodies, sometimes bearing impressed manufacturer marks on the base.

An antique ceramic jug functions as an impactful decorative vessel on a kitchen island, dining table, or sideboard. It can be displayed as a standalone focal piece, arranged alongside contrasting pottery, or utilised as a vase for fresh foliage.

Antique ironstone should be cleaned gently by hand using warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding abrasive pads or harsh chemical cleaners. To preserve delicate overglaze enamels and metallic lustres, avoid soaking the piece or placing it in modern dishwashers.
