Antique English Silver Half Hunter Pocket Watch, 1891

19th century
Description

Antique English silver half hunter pocket watch, 1891.

The watch has an English stem-winding movement, most likely from the Coventry watch makers, which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 49mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the backs covers for London 1891, with a maker’s mark for the Coventry case maker Arthur James Walker. The case is in lovely condition. The front has blue enamel filled Roman numerals surrounding a small central lens. The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover.

Inside, there is a glass lens which is in lovely condition.

The dial is in very nice condition with pin-set blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute track. The watch retains its half hunter hour hand so that the time can be read when the front cover is closed.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A half hunter, or demi-hunter, pocket watch features a protective outer case with a central glass aperture, allowing the wearer to read the time without opening the front cover. Popularised during the 19th century, this design protected the dial crystal while offering quick readability.

Late Victorian pocket watches typically featured solid sterling silver or gold cases, vitreous enamel dials, and hand-cut steel hands. The outer covers frequently incorporated inlaid enamel Roman numerals surrounding a central crystal aperture.

Authentic late 19th-century English silver watches display official British assay office hallmarks stamped inside the case covers, indicating the purity, location, and year of manufacture. Additionally, period-correct movement designs and hand-finished enamel dials distinguish genuine antique timepieces.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed under a glass cloche dome or suspended from a dedicated brass pocket watch stand on a desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece. Integrating the timepiece into a valet tray or shadow box frame also highlights its horological interest.

Keep the watch in a dry environment away from moisture and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent tarnishing and mechanical deterioration. Regular servicing by a qualified horologist ensures internal gear lubrication, while soft silver polishing cloths safely maintain the outer casing.
