Catalogue Note
Although Wardle is principally known for animal and sporting subjects, landscape formed an established part of his practice. He is documented as having produced oil sketches on Exmoor, while recorded works include numerous moorland compositions.

A standalone River Landscape*carries provenance from Sotheby’s 1994 Works from the Studio of Arthur Wardle dispersal.
Particularly relevant is A Rocky Pathway, Dartmoor, a similarly intimate south-west English landscape documented among works retained by Wardle and subsequently passing by family descent.

The Artist
Wardle first exhibited at the Royal Academy while still a teenager and subsequently became one of Britain’s foremost animal painters.
He became a member of the Pastel Society in 1911 and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1922.
