This nineteenth-century French Louis XVI style two-seat corbeille sofa displays a carved giltwood frame in red and gold. The piece has a curved corbeille back with foliate carving, a sprung seat, nailed borders, and channel-moulded fluted tapered supports. The woodwork exhibits fine beaded trim moulding along the edges, while the plush velvet upholstery is finished in a deep crimson red. Measuring approximately 130 cm in width, 75 cm in depth, and 85 cm in height, the seat accommodates two people comfortably. The structural frame remains in good condition, and the fabric shows minor surface wear suitable for steam cleaning. Ideal for placement in a traditional living room, a formal study, or a grand bedroom, this settee brings classic French chateau character to an interior. The compact proportions allow it to sit easily against a wall, in a bay window, or at the foot of a bed as an accent seat. The warm gold tones of the giltwood frame complement neutral walls and antique wooden furniture, while the rich red velvet fabric adds a distinct splash of colour to a traditional or eclectic home seating arrangement.

FAQs

A corbeille sofa, originating in 18th-century France, features a continuous curved backrest that wraps around the sides to form integrated armrests, creating a distinctive basket-like shape.

These pieces were crafted from solid carved hardwoods, such as beech or walnut, coated with layers of gesso, and finished with applied gold leaf over a clay bole base.

Authentic examples display hand-carved joinery, traditional hand-tied coil springs, natural horsehair or fibre padding, and delicate surface wear showing the underlying gesso or bole beneath the gold leaf.

Position the sofa as a accent piece in a formal reception room, at the foot of a bed, or within an entrance hall, contrasting the ornate frame against contemporary minimalist backdrops.

Dust the gilded frame using a soft, dry camel-hair brush while avoiding water or liquid polishes, and vacuum velvet upholstery regularly using a gentle, soft-brush attachment.
