Plaster cast sculpture gained widespread popularity during the Grand Tour era and throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as art academies and private collectors sought accurate casts of classical antiquities for study and display.

Traditional plaster busts are created by pouring liquid gypsum plaster into multi-piece plaster or rubber moulds derived from an original clay model or sculpted piece, resulting in a hollow or solid cast.

Twentieth-century plaster casts often display subtle seam lines left by the original moulding process, areas of hand-carved finishing, natural surface patina, or impressed studio foundry marks near the base.

A plaster bust can be positioned on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or standalone plinth, set against dark or textured walls to create strong structural contrast in modern or classical settings.
