The work is very well executed with real atmosphere. The more one looks, the more one sees with distinct fields and distant cottages with smoking chimneys. Signed lower right.

A slight ripple effect can be seen to the lower left of the board from historic board expansion and contraction, however the paint remains stable. The work is housed in a period giltwood frame and displays extremely well.

THE ARTIST

Kershaw Schofield was a Bradford born painter of landscapes, seascapes and flower subjects in watercolour. He also managed The Grosvenor Studio, a photographic business in Newton Street, Bradford, where he painted onto, or finished in colour, photographs of local worthies. He drew much of his inspiration from scenes around the Stoney Ridge and Cottingley countryside near his home at Chellow Grange.

Kershaw exhibited prolifically with the Yorkshire Union of Artists and regularly exhibited at the Spring Open Exhibitions at Cartwright Hall. Kershaw’s paintings can be seen at Cartwright Hall, Bradford, Huddersfield Art Gallery, and the Hepworth Wakefield. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy for over 40 years, as well as at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.

His work is characterised by its restrained colour and use of low horizons in the compositions.

PROVENANCE

Alfred Haley was a wealthy mill owner, who supported various Yorkshire artists by buying their work, and in the process of doing so, became friends with many of them. An amateur painter himself, he later owned a farm on the North York Moors and was made an honourable member of the Staithes School, where he spent a good deal of time.
