Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-Victorian seating, prominent from the 1850s to the 1870s, features ornate hand-carved timber frames, serpentine cresting rails, and deep button-tufted upholstery. These pieces reflected the periods preference for comfort combined with decorative timber moulding and curving cabriole legs.

Victorian cabinetmakers favoured rich dark hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut. Internal seat frames were traditionally constructed using coil springs, horsehair filling, and jute webbing, upholstered in heavy textiles like velvet, damask, or wool upholstery.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature hand-carved frame accents, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and dense, dark grain patterns characteristic of rosewood. Inspection beneath the frame usually reveals hand-laced springs, jute webbing, and hand-cut wood screws rather than modern staples or synthetic materials.

Position a Victorian settee as a focal point in an entryway, bedroom window alcove, or wide hallway. Contrast the carved timber frame and plush upholstery with neutral wall paint, modern architectural lighting, and simple floor coverings to balance period and contemporary elements.

Keep carved timber frames away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent dry cracking, applying period-appropriate beeswax along the wood grain annually. Vacuum velvet upholstery using a soft brush attachment and blot spills immediately with a dry cloth without rubbing the pile.
