Catalogue Note
Marsyas, the Phrygian satyr renowned for his mastery of the aulos, entered into musical competition with Apollo. Apollo ultimately prevailed, and the terrible punishment of Marsyas made the story an enduring classical warning concerning artistic pride, rivalry and divine authority.

The composition presents the encounter as a theatrical gathering beneath a dominant tree and dramatic sky. Its surviving blue, crimson, warm flesh and deep woodland colours retain considerable decorative presence.

The seated elder at right may represent King Midas, although this identification is interpretative rather than definitive.
The Artist
Filippo Lauri (1623-1694) was an important Roman Baroque painter known for mythological compositions, landscapes and refined classical figure groups.

The present unsigned work is conservatively catalogued as Italian School, 18th Century, after Filippo Lauri, recognising its relationship to his artistic tradition without asserting direct authorship.
