Introduction

An impressive 18th-century Italian School oil on canvas depicting the mythological musical contest between Apollo and Marsyas.

Set within an atmospheric wooded landscape, the protagonists are surrounded by classical figures witnessing the encounter. A seated elder at right may represent King Midas within the wider mythological tradition.

Catalogue Details

Artist / School: Italian School

Attribution: After Filippo Lauri (1623-1694)

Date: 18th Century

Medium: Oil on canvas

Signature: Unsigned

Style: Italian Baroque / Old Master

Catalogue Note

Marsyas, the Phrygian satyr renowned for his mastery of the aulos, entered into musical competition with Apollo. Apollo ultimately prevailed, and the terrible punishment of Marsyas made the story an enduring classical warning concerning artistic pride, rivalry and divine authority.

The composition presents the encounter as a theatrical gathering beneath a dominant tree and dramatic sky. Its surviving blue, crimson, warm flesh and deep woodland colours retain considerable decorative presence.

The seated elder at right may represent King Midas, although this identification is interpretative rather than definitive.

The Artist

Filippo Lauri (1623-1694) was an important Roman Baroque painter known for mythological compositions, landscapes and refined classical figure groups.

The present unsigned work is conservatively catalogued as Italian School, 18th Century, after Filippo Lauri, recognising its relationship to his artistic tradition without asserting direct authorship.

Private Northern UK collection.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian mythological paintings from the 18th century typically feature classical allegorical subjects from Greek and Roman literature, rendered with dramatic light contrast, expressive figures, and naturalistic landscape settings.

Artists during this period applied hand-ground oil pigments onto stretched linen canvas or timber panels, layered over gesso grounds and preserved with natural resin varnishes.

Authenticity is evaluated through aged craquelure patterns, period-correct canvas weave and stretcher construction, natural pigment oxidisation, and original hand-carved joinery on frame backings.

A classical framed painting functions as a central focal point when placed above a mantelpiece or sideboard, creating an intentional contrast between historical artwork and contemporary furniture lines.

Keep antique paintings away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and radiators, dusting the surface lightly with a dry, soft-bristle brush rather than using liquid solvents.
