Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Figurative timber carvings representing noblemen or cavaliers became popular during the 17th and 18th centuries across Europe. These figures were commissioned for private chapels, grand manor libraries, architectural niches, or as decorative allegorical elements representing status and heritage.

These sculptures were typically hand-carved from native hardwoods such as oak, lime, or pine. The timber was then primed with layers of gesso (a mixture of binder and chalk) before painted pigments or gilding were applied to define details like costume and facial features.

Authentic period figures display distinct hand-chisel marks, natural wood shrinkage cracks running parallel to the grain, and historic paint layering or natural flaking. The undersides and joints usually show timber oxidation and age-appropriate wear that cannot be easily replicated by modern machinery.

In corporate or residential interiors, a carved statue serves as a strong sculptural focal point when displayed on a sideboard, within a recessed wall alcove, or positioned on a column pedestal. Pairing weathered figurative art with contemporary minimalist backdrops creates a compelling textural contrast.

Maintain painted timber carvings by dusting gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid liquid cleaners, polish, or water, which can dissolve historical gesso layers and accelerate paint flaking, and keep the object away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity.
