After Sir Godfrey Kneller King William III Royal Portrait Early 18th Century

A distinguished early 18th century British oil portrait of King William III, 1650-1702, painted after the established royal portraiture of Sir Godfrey Kneller, 1646-1723, Principal Painter to the Crown.

William III is depicted bust length within an oval composition wearing magnificent royal state robes, an ermine lined mantle, elaborate lace cravat and the ceremonial Collar of the Order of the Garter with the suspended Great George.

The Portrait

William's pale features are framed by a long dark allonge periwig characteristic of the late Stuart court. The combination of patterned fabric, ermine, lace and Garter insignia creates an imposing image of monarchy and chivalric authority.

Conservation

Professionally examined and conserved in 2026. Examination confirmed historic lining, extensive craquelure and areas of previous overpainting. UV fluorescence examination formed part of the assessment.

Treatment included surface cleaning, selective varnish removal, filling of localised losses, sympathetic retouching, conservation varnishing and securing the canvas to its strainer.

An older discoloured varnish layer was retained following professional assessment.

A professional Condition Report, Treatment Report and photographic conservation record accompany the painting.

Overall framed: approximately 104 x 86 x 6 cm or 40.9 x 33.9 x 2.3 inches.

Condition

Presented in professionally conserved historic condition consistent with its considerable age. The historically lined canvas displays extensive craquelure, including areas of raised cracking, with previous overpainting particularly within the background.

The associated gilt frame has historic alterations, repairs and restoration and is not represented as demonstrably original.
