19th Century Regency Period Mahogany Chaise Longue, C1820

19th century
Description

Fine Quality Early 19th Century Regency Mahogany Upholstered Chaise Longue Sofa

*England, circa 1820*

A fine quality early 19th-century Regency period mahogany chaise longue, dating from around 1820 and presented in excellent condition.

This elegant chaise is constructed from solid mahogany and features a sweeping right-hand raised arm and back, beautifully carved with a refined scroll detail that flows seamlessly into the seat. The frame stands on turned baluster front and rear legs, all original, terminating in delicate brass castors adding to the piece’s Regency charm. The sofa seat height is 44cm.

Professionally reupholstered in a luxurious yellow floral damask, the chaise boasts deep buttoning to the arm and back, with matching braid trim and a coordinating bolster cushion. The traditionally stuffed and sprung seat, with horsehair fillings, offers firm yet comfortable support, designed so that you sit elegantly on the chaise rather than sinking into it. The underside is finished in hessian in the traditional manner, reflecting the high quality of the work throughout. The mahogany frame has been carefully cleaned and French polished, bringing out a rich, warm colour and a beautiful sheen that highlights the fine lines and proportions of the design.

Equally at home in a living room, bedroom, dressing room or study, this Regency chaise longue works wonderfully in both traditional and contemporary interiors. It is not only a striking decorative statement but also a highly practical and comfortable piece of period furniture, a refined addition to any home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 19th century, a Regency chaise longue is an asymmetric reclining sofa characterised by classical Greco-Roman influences, scrolled ends, and elegant woodwork, typically crafted from dark hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood.

Frames were primarily constructed from solid mahogany or rosewood, often featuring brass castors and decorative mounts. Upholstery traditionally incorporated natural horsehair stuffing, steel coil springs, and luxury fabrics such as silk, damask, or velvet.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct joinery, hand-carved mahogany details, original brass castors with steel screws, and weight consistent with solid hardwood framing rather than modern veneers or pine core construction.

A Regency chaise longue functions as a focal point at the foot of a bed, within a bay window, or alongside contemporary seating in a living room, balancing modern clean lines with classical historic proportions.

Timber elements should be preserved using natural beeswax applied along the grain, while fabric upholstery requires light vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and protection from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
