Mid 18th-century German School, Portrait of Dr Johann David Wechsler - Antique Oil Painting

18th century
For Sale by Brave Fine Art
Description

This intriguing mid 18th-century German oil painting depicts Dr Johann David Wechsler, a respected civic figure. Painted around 1760, when Wechsler was in his early 30s, it presents a man whose life was devoted to public service and the careful administration of his community.

His appearance is strikingly understated. Dressed in fashionable yet restrained attire, with immaculate lace cuffs and powdered hair, he peers back at us, across the centuries. The artist has focused on conveying his composure, which suggests a man whose authority rested upon his judgement.

An inscription on the reverse identifies him as the "Jur. Hospital Syndic" - the legal administrator of the Holy Spirit Hospital in Biberach. In the 18th century this was far more than a medical institution. Hospitals functioned as charitable foundations, almshouses, financial bodies and centres of civic welfare, making the position one of considerable responsibility. Wechsler would've been entrusted with overseeing legal affairs, managing property, and safeguarding an institution that cared for many of the town's most vulnerable inhabitants.

It's tempting to imagine that this portrait marked an important moment in his life. In 1760, his first wife, Maria Veronica, died at the age of just 31, leaving him with a young family. Later that same year, he remarried.

Historians describe Wechsler as possessing an enduring curiosity about the place he called home. Decades later he published his 'Versuch einer kurzen Sammlung topographisch-historisch-statistischer Nachrichten', one of the earliest comprehensive histories of the Free Imperial City of Biberach. In it he described the city's churches, trades, governance, customs and daily life with remarkable care, believing that the history of a community was worth preserving for future generations.

The relaxed hand, the slight turn of the body and the directness of the gaze suggest a thoughtful individual who was entirely comfortable in the world of ideas. More than two and a half centuries later, the portrait still feels remarkably approachable.

Inscribed on the reverse and held in a later frame.

18th-century European portraiture is defined by structured composition, subtle lighting, and formal posing, capturing sitters with symbols of their profession, wealth, or intellect.

Artists during this period typically applied hand-ground pigments bound in linseed oil onto hand-stretched linen canvas or wood panels, often finishing with a protective natural resin varnish.

Authentic period paintings feature natural age craquelure across the paint surface, hand-carved or period-appropriate stretcher frames, and signs of age-related oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas.

An antique portrait pairs effectively with dark wood cabinetry, muted wall palettes, or minimalist contemporary furniture to create a focal point with historical context.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources. Clean gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solutions.
