20th Century School Moonlit Landscape

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Darnley Fine Art
Description

Pen, brush and India ink on paper, signed and dated '1917' lower right

Image size: 14 1/2 x 11 inches (37 x 28 cm)

Contemporary-style hand-made frame

This enigmatic work shows a landscape bathed in moonlight, the bright, full moon illuminating the scene through a break in the clouds. Using a combination of fine line pen work and brush with India ink, the artist captures the effects of the moonlight, from the velvety blackness of the trees to the bright reflections on the clouds above. The viewer’s eye is drawn along the hedgerow, interspersed with trees, beyond into the distance.

A small plaque attached to the lower right gives a potential artist’s name and date of 1917, though the exact lettering and subsequent identification of the artist are still under investigation.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nocturnal landscape art from the early 20th century focuses on atmospheric lighting, dramatic tonal contrast, and mood, capturing night scenes using techniques such as intricate pen-and-ink hatching, wash drawings, or printmaking.

Artists typically utilised iron gall, India ink, or carbon-based drawing inks applied with steel nib dip pens onto heavy rag or cellulose paper stock to achieve precise line detail.

Authentic period drawings display minute variations in ink flow and density under magnification, subtle natural age toning on the paper, and often bear contemporary signatures or dates in the lower margins.

Monochrome drawings can be framed in slim, dark wooden moulding or minimalist black frames to pair alongside modern black-and-white photography, creating a cohesive gallery wall display.

Paper art should be mounted using acid-free archival materials and sealed behind UV-filtering glass, positioned away from direct sunlight, sources of heat, and high humidity.
