This 1900 Black Forest pair of hand-carved wooden sculptures depicts a young girl with geese and a young boy with a dog. The figures display detailed gouge work textures on their clothing, warm brown wooden tones, and veined marble bases. Both pieces stand upon rectangular wooden plinths mounted onto pale pink and cream marble blocks, with subtle touches of paint visible on the eyes, lips and dog tongue. Each sculpture measures 16.5 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 6.5 cm deep. These decorative objects work well as bookends or shelf ornaments within a rustic farmhouse interior. They suit placement on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or study desk to add character and traditional woodworking detail to a room. The items remain in original good used condition with intact patination and no missing parts.

FAQs

Black Forest wood carving originated in the Brienz region of Switzerland during the early nineteenth century. Local artisans developed a tradition of hand-carving native timbers into realistic depictions of wildlife, alpine figures, and rustic scenes to sell to Grand Tour travellers.

Carvers primarily worked with dense hardwoods native to the alpine region, such as lime wood, linden, walnut, and pear wood. These timbers provided fine grain structure suitable for detailed gouge work and were frequently mounted onto marble, stone, or timber plinths.

Authentic pieces feature crisp chisel marks, hand-tooled surface textures, and naturalistic proportions. Look for detailed carving on figures, drapery, and hair, as well as period-appropriate construction methods and natural age-related patina on the timber.

Place a pair of carved figures on a mahogany bookshelf, study desk, or mantelpiece to add sculptural interest and warm timber tones. They integrate effectively into traditional library settings or rustic country interiors.

Keep carved timber items away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent splitting or warping. Clean carefully using a soft brush to clear dust from recessed carvings, and occasionally apply clear beeswax to preserve the timber finish.
