This Georgian cut steel wax seal fob dates to 1750. The piece takes the form of a small dark grey metal stamping tool with a circular head joined to a short stem and a small suspension loop at the rear. The round face displays an engraved cursive letter U at the centre, enclosed by a distinct beaded border ring and an outer moulded rim. The dark steel exhibits an even, aged metallic patina across the smooth surfaces and the incised letter. Measuring 2.2 cm tall, the fob weighs 5 grams and is free from dings, splits and repairs. Collectors can display this compact desk accessory on a library shelf, inside a collector cabinet, or place it on a desk top as a study paperweight.

A Georgian wax seal fob is a small decorative stamp, designed to hang from a watch chain during the eighteenth century, used to press a personal monogram or crest into sealing wax on personal letters.

Eighteenth-century seals were crafted using hand-forged steel, often featuring micro-faceted cut steel beadwork, polished surfaces, and hand-engraved intaglio lettering or symbols.

Authentic Georgian steel seals display hand-engraved detailing, dark surface patina, subtle hand-forged joinery, and microscopic wear consistent with historical use.

Antique wax seal fobs are frequently worn as unique charm pendants on modern neck chains or preserved in small glass shadow boxes alongside historical paper items.

Keep steel items completely dry to prevent oxidisation, brush gently with a dry soft-bristled brush, and apply a light coat of microcrystalline wax for long-term protection.
