Wooden Sculpture of a Saint Bernard Rescue Dog

1920 - 1940
Description

An appealing Swiss "Black Forest" folk art hand-carved wooden sculpture of a standing Saint Bernard rescue dog from the 1930s-1940.

Excellently carved from a single block of traditional lime wood, this piece features the characteristic, textured faceted gouge marks used by Alpine workshops to expertly replicate the heavy, thick texture of the dog's coat. A prominent, deeply incised collar groove is carved entirely around the neck for a separately turned miniature wooden brandy barrel.

The facial features are expressive, detailed with a hand-sculpted muzzle and hand-painted eyes showing a multi-tonal pupil and iris finish.

The entire sculpture remain unvarnished and clean, displaying the clear, bare grain of the wood.

A highly collectable example of Alpine woodcarving sculpture, presenting in excellent original condition with a warm honey-brown patina and completely free from splits, chips, or restoration.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Carved wooden figures of Saint Bernard dogs originated in the Swiss Alpine region, particularly around Brienz, during the nineteenth century. Craftspeople produced detailed timber animal carvings depicting regional wildlife and rescue dogs for tourists and collectors.

These sculptures are typically hand-carved from native European hardwoods such as linden wood, lime wood, walnut, or pine. The finished timber is often stained, painted, or waxed to accentuate the carved details and natural wood grain.

Authentic hand-carved pieces feature visible chisel marks, slight structural asymmetries, and textured fur details gouged directly into the wood. Machine-made reproductions tend to have smoother, uniform surfaces and lack fine hand-tooled depth.

Position the sculpture on a wooden bookshelf, side table, or mantelpiece alongside vintage books and brass accents. Its warm timber tones and folk-art aesthetic fit well within country house, traditional, or rustic interior schemes.

Dust the item regularly using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to clean carved grooves. Keep the sculpture away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent the timber from drying, cracking, or warping.
