Spelter figures are cast metal sculptures made from a zinc alloy, popularised during the 19th century as an accessible alternative to traditional bronze, frequently depicting classical, mythological, or military subjects.

These statues were cast in hollow moulds using a zinc-based alloy, after which a dark patination, lacquer, or chemical bronzing was applied to imitate the appearance of patinated bronze.

Spelter is lighter in weight than solid cast bronze, non-magnetic, softer to the touch, and reveals a white or silvery zinc metal beneath if scratched, unlike bronze which displays a yellow-brown core.
