Produced primarily in Canton during the 18th and 19th centuries, pith paper watercolours were created for Western travellers seeking visual souvenirs of Asian flora, fauna, and culture. Painted on the dried cellular tissue of the Tetrapanax papyrifer plant, these artworks were prized for their vivid gouache pigments and velvety surface texture.

These works typically utilised natural mineral and plant-based pigments mixed with a water-soluble binder. Media were applied to fine rag paper, vellum, or pith tissue, and were framed behind glass with acid-free mounts to prevent pigment breakdown.

Authentic period paintings show subtle hand-painted line variations, natural age toning, and slight imperfections in the paper structure. Pith paper in particular exhibits a translucent, micro-cellular texture under magnification and may show fine cracks along the edges due to its delicate nature.

Botanical watercolours integrate well into gallery wall arrangements alongside modern line drawings or modern photography. Placing a gilded botanical frame against a dark or neutral wall colour creates a focal point in hallways, studies, or dining spaces.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and fluctuating temperatures to prevent fading and paper warping. Frame the piece using UV-protective glass and conservation-grade, acid-free backing boards.
