Description

This is a beautiful antique Chinese (Qing) botanical watercolour dating from the mid 19th Century. The well executed painting depicts insects and a butterfly surrounded by native flora.The watercolour is in strong gouache colours on pith and is presented in a neat giltframe with a soft raspberry mount. It is in good condition and measures 36 cms by 28 cms overall including the frame.

FAQs

Chinese export pith paintings were produced primarily in Canton during the 19th century for Western trade. Painted on sheets harvested from the pith of the Tetrapanax papyrifer plant, these works typically feature botanical studies, natural history, or cultural subjects created using gouache and watercolour.

These paintings were executed on delicate sheets cut from the spongy pith of the rice paper plant using specialized knives. Artists applied water-based gouache and mineral pigments, which sat on the surface to produce rich colours and a slight three-dimensional effect.

Authentic pith paintings feature a distinct cellular structure that holds paint on the surface, giving the pigments an embossed appearance. Due to the brittle nature of aged pith, small splits, cracks, or minor fractures are common along the edges or surface.

Framed botanical watercolours can be displayed individually in tight alcoves or combined with other natural history studies to create a gallery wall. Pairing traditional gilt or dark frames against neutral or bold painted backdrops highlights the historical contrast.

Pith paper is extremely vulnerable to moisture and direct light. The artwork should remain framed under UV-protective glass, displayed away from direct sunlight and damp environments, and handled strictly by the frame to prevent cracking the delicate support.
