18th Century Mahogany Serpentine Chest Of Drawers

£3,800    $5,148    €4,477
A superb 18th Century Solid Mahogany Serpentine Chest of wonderful faded golden colour. It is In outstanding original condition and has the original handles , locks and bracket feet still in place. The beautiful top is made from one piece of solid Mahogany as are the ends. The linings are nice and clean and made in Oak, the pine underneath and back boards have the original red wash which can be seen on pieces of period Mahogany furniture, this practice seems to have started around the 2nd quarter of the 18th Century.

Many documented pieces from the workshop of Thomas Chippendale are known to have had this treatment which seems to involve adding a small amount of glue to the mix. The bricked up blocks to the inside of the bracket feet are also a feature of various cabinet makers of the period including Chippendales workshop. Circa 1760.
