Portrait Of Jane Harris (later Mrs Bigg) In A White Dress And Blue Mantle C.1731; By Enoch Seeman (the Younger) (c.1694–1745), Oil On Canvas Painting
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Titan Fine Art
This exquisite portrait remained for nearly 300 years in the possession of the sitter’s descendants, preserved among the Bigg-Wither family portraits at their magnificent stately manor Manydown Park in Hampshire.
This elegant early Georgian portrait depicts Jane Harris (later Mrs Walter Bigg) at around twenty-five years of age, shortly before her marriage, and is convincingly attributed to Enoch Seeman the Younger, circa 1731. Painted at half length within a feigned oval stone frame, the sitter wears a draped blue silk mantle over a satin gown, her calm, direct gaze and refined bearing conveying poised gentility. The restrained baroque elegance, cool palette, and softly modelled flesh are characteristic of Seeman’s mature style in the early 1730s, aligning closely with his portraits of gentry and court-connected sitters of the period.
Jane Harris was the only daughter and heiress of Dr John Harris, rector of Chiddingfold, and granddaughter of the poet and Dean of Salisbury, Dr Ed...ward Young. In 1734 she married the Reverend Walter Bigg, uniting her with a family of long-standing property and status that later merged with the Wither family of Manydown Park, Hampshire. The portrait was almost certainly commissioned shortly before her marriage, marking her entry into adult society and her future role within the Bigg-Wither lineage. Heraldic evidence confirms the importance of the alliance, and the sitter’s age accords precisely with a circa 1731 dating.
The painting has descended directly through the family for nearly three centuries, remaining at Manydown Park until the twenty-first century. Verso inscriptions identify the sitter and record later family custodianship, while a documented conservation by M. Knoedler & Co., London, in 1954 ensured the canvas’s long-term stability. As a result, the portrait survives in exceptional condition, with vibrant original surface and intact glazes.
Beyond its distinguished provenance, the work stands as a fine and fully autograph example of Seeman’s portraiture. Secure sitter identification, uninterrupted family descent, and high artistic quality combine to make this a rare survival: an authentic heirloom portrait that embodies both the social aspirations and refined visual culture of early Georgian England.
