Mid 19th Century Burr Birch Swedish Secretaire Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

Mid 19th century burr birch swedish secretaire chest of drawers circa 1860.

We are pleased to offer this scandinavian birch and pine secretaire chest, which has just been fully restored in our workshop.  made in birch with birch root drawer fronts and a pine writing interior.

Top surface with moulded and sides of the same grain, fitted with 4 deep drawers.  top drawer pulls out and front drops down to form a writing surface and allow access to the fully fitted pine and birch root interior of drawers arranged around a central tabernacle.  each drawer fitted with ornate brass handles and escutheon.  raised on 4 block feet.

Later applied hardware circa 1900, in line with fashion, as swedish chests of this period never had handles.  later replaced block feet and lower moulding which has been done to a high standard.  minor restorations to woodwork.  recently re-polished in our workshop and ready for everyday use.

This mid-19th-century Biedermeier secretaire chest of drawers originates from Sweden and dates to circa 1860. The Scandinavian piece is constructed from birch and pine, finished in a warm golden blonde tone, and decorated with highly figured burr birch veneers across the four horizontal drawers and side panels. The top drawer functions as a drop-front desk flap concealing a fitted pine and birch root interior with internal drawers arranged around a central tabernacle, secured by ornate brass keyhole escutcheons and later applied ornate brass drop handles dating to circa 1900. Additional visible details include a moulded top surface, later replaced lower moulding, and four block feet. Measuring 100.3 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 48.2 cm deep, the chest has undergone recent workshop restoration involving minor woodwork repairs and re-polishing. It provides practical storage and a functional writing surface, making it suitable for everyday use in a home study, bedroom, or living room as a statement storage piece.

FAQs

A Swedish burr birch secretaire chest is a mid-19th-century storage unit combining a chest of drawers with a concealed pull-down writing desk, characterised by figured birch wood veneers.

These chests feature burr birch veneers laid over solid pine frame construction, fitted with cast brass handles, metal key escutcheons, and dovetail jointed drawers.

Authentic examples showcase natural variation in the figured burr grain, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, traditional brass hardware with original patination, and a concealed fitted desk interior.

The warm golden tones and clean architectural lines of burr birch complement minimalist interiors, serving as a functional home office focal point in a living room, hallway, or bedroom.

Preserve the veneer finish by applying a natural beeswax polish twice yearly, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources, and maintaining steady humidity levels to prevent timber shrinkage or cracking.
