Drop Front Secretaire Chest
A drop front secretaire chest combines everyday drawer storage with a pull-down writing flap that conceals internal compartments. When you search for a drop front secretaire chest, you encounter forms ranging from tall Georgian bookcases to compact Regency cabinets and Continental bureau designs.
The most common examples on this page date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, spanning Georgian, Regency and Victorian periods. Many incorporate glazed upper bookcases or tall Wellington formats with lateral locking mechanisms.
What varies in quality
The degree of craftsmanship shows in the selection and bookmatching of timber veneers, particularly on curved or flat fall-front panels. Superior examples exhibit precise dovetail joinery on internal drawers and tidy secret compartments.
Proportion and scale dictate the success of the piece, with finer items maintaining balanced drawer arrangements and clean lines despite the complex internal mechanism of the drop front.
