At first glance, the scene appears calm and beautifully ordered. Yet the sea is alive with motion.
The artist understood water intimately. Each surface changes constantly - translucent green troughs deepen into dark blue-black shadow before dissolving again into spray and reflected sky.
The central vessel in the background is especially interesting. Its hybrid configuration - both steam propulsion and sail rigging - places the work within the transitional era of maritime engineering. The single funnel, together with the elongated hull and retained sailing masts, strongly suggests an early paddle steamer of the type seen between approximately 1835 and 1870. During these decades, steam technology had not yet entirely replaced sail.
To the left, a traditional square-rigged vessel advances with monumental dignity beneath full canvas, while nearby a yacht bearing an ensign associated with the Royal Swedish Yacht Club, cuts sharply through the waves. It's tempting to think that the painting was originally commissioned by a member of that community.
A label on the reverse reads "Tillhör Heidenstam(s)" ("Belongs to Heidenstam"), which introduces a layer of provenance, pointing toward prior Swedish ownership.
Held in a 19th-century gilt frame with scrolling Rococo-style ornament.
