A matched pair of Edwardian Chinese export watercolour paintings on pith paper depicts traditional figurative scenes, one showing a warrior with sai and the other a child with a fish lantern. The artworks are presented behind glass within dark frames featuring gilded decorative mouldings, complemented by green mounting mats. Signs of age include general wear, marks and foxing on the pith paper backgrounds, alongside ebonised wood frames with visible gilt patterns. Measuring 41 cm high, 32 cm wide and 2 cm deep, these framed pictures suit a narrow wall space in a study, library or hallway. They bring traditional oriental art and muted colour accents to a home interior.

Produced primarily in Canton during the 18th and 19th centuries, these watercolours were created specifically for Western traders and travellers seeking visual visualisations of Chinese culture, costumes, trades, and folklore.

These works were painted using watercolour pigments applied directly onto delicate sheets cut from the spongy inner pith of the Tetrapanax papyrifer shrub, which offers a vivid translucent finish.

Authentic pieces generally display natural age-related toning, minor split fractures due to the brittle nature of aged pith, and rich mineral-based pigments that maintain vibrant colour tones.

Display them as a matched pair on a narrow wall or gallery grid, pairing the historic detailed line work with modern minimal furniture to create contrast.

Position framed pieces away from direct sunlight and damp environments, ensuring UV-protective glass is used to guard the organic material against fading and deterioration.
