We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian fruit still life watercolours are known for their meticulous attention to detail, fine stippling, and realistic depiction of textures such as fruit bloom and foliage. Heavily influenced by William Henry Hunt and the Pre-Raphaelite emphasis on truth to nature, artists often depicted mossy banks, stones, and rustic outdoor backgrounds rather than formal indoor tabletops.

Artists during this period typically painted on heavy cotton rag paper using transparent watercolour pigments often heightened with gouache, or Chinese white, to build opacity and highlights. Frames were usually carved wood with real gold leaf gilding over a gesso ground, protecting the artwork behind glass.

Authentic works by John Sherrin RI (18191896) feature distinctively dense, layered stippling to create realistic textures on plums, grapes, and bird nests. Look for genuine signatures, period-appropriate paper age tones, provenance labels on the frame backboard, and the characteristic mossy background style derived from his master, William Henry Hunt.

Victorian watercolours can be styled as focal points above a sideboard or incorporated into a mixed-era gallery wall alongside contemporary framing. The natural green and earthy tones of botanical subjects complement both modern minimalist neutral palettes and traditional dark wood interiors.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, display watercolours away from direct sunlight and heat sources, ideally using UV-protective glass. Ensure the artwork is mounted with acid-free matting board and sealed to protect against humidity and dust infiltration.
